The Benefits Of Having An Electric Van

Following Boris Johnson’s recent conference on the net zero strategy to introduce a zero-emission vehicle mandate, car manufacturers will steadily increase sales of zero emission vehicles towards the 2030 target of ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and committing to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. So, it could be time to think about the benefits of having an electric vehicle on your fleet. With the additional rising pressure of your company being more environmentally friendly, it’s definitely worth a look into the benefits of going electric:

Arguably, one of the most important benefits is the lower running costs. At this point, it’s a well-known fact that electric vehicles are cheaper to run; not only is the cost per mile for electricity lower than diesel alternatives but the maintenance is also considerably cheaper! In electric vehicles, there are fewer moving parts, and they are less harsh on the brakes meaning that you won’t be having to get things repaired as often as your standard vehicle.

The most obvious point would be the fact it is more environmentally friendly. Electric vehicles have zero tailpipe emissions, so it improves the air quality by reducing harmful Co2 and NOx emissions. It is also a major image booster for your company; as there is an increasing need to be greener, if your company is seen to have an environmental conscience, it will make your business more favourable and attractive to customers who support this cause.

Another benefit is the fact it is silent and relaxing to drive. There have been studies that have found that drivers reported they were calmer and much less stressed in an electric vehicle. This could be due to the electric vehicle’s silent nature, allowing drivers to be in a more concentrated state of mind.

There are incentives and for driving electric cars, but did you know that there are various schemes to encourage electric vehicles for commercial use too? As it stands, the current vans and trucks eligible are:

ULEZ, LEZ, CAZ and ZEZ – What are they and how do they affect your business?

The government have made their agenda very clear that they are wanting to improve the air quality in our cities. We are all facing increasing pressure to make sure our vehicles are green and even if this is something you feel isn’t affecting your business right now, now is the time to start thinking about it, especially with the ULEZ expansion.

But let’s start off by defining ULEZ, LEZ and CAZ and locating where these zones are.

Ultra Low Emission Zone: it currently exists in the same area as the congestion zone in London but as of October 25th it is expanding from central London to the North Circular Road and the South Circular Road. If your vehicle does not meet the ULEZ standards then you can either look at upgrading to a second-hand vehicle which you can get converted with us at Rex or you can look at going electric, electric vehicles emit no NOx or CO2 from the tailpipe.

Low Emission Zone: If your vehicle does not meet LEZ emissions standards you can retrofit your vehicle or you can invest in reduction technology such as: selective catalytic reduction, converting a vehicle to electric power and replacement Euro VI engines. There is a misconception that installing a filter will allow you to meet LEZ standards but doing this does not guarantee that you’ll meet these standards at all. The LEZ covers most of Greater London. Several places are now introducing LEZ in their cities, including London, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

Clean Air Zone: CAZ has been introduced across England so we can all breathe healthier and cleaner air. This zone could be applied to a single street or an area of a city. Vehicles that don’t comply with the emissions standard are found by using number plate cameras. There are CAZ in bath and Birmingham, with Portsmouth joining at the end of November.

Zero Emission Zone: in this zone vehicles are subject to restrictions on exhaust emissions beyond those in ULEZ and LEZ. ZEZs will help improve air quality while encouraging people to walk, cycle, use public transport or switch to zero-emission vehicles. The first zone will pilot in February 2022.

So how do you know if you are compliant and where can you find the European emission standard in your vehicle? You can find out if you are compliant by searching your registration on the government website and it will also show any charges applicable; if you want to find your European emission standard for your vehicle you can do so by either looking in your logbook or contacting your vehicle manufacturer.

Temperature Controlled Electric Vans

At Rex we are keeping a close eye within the electric van industry. It’s clear to us that temperature controlled electric vans will soon be a more regular sight on UK roads. The government is set to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK from 2030. That means in the next decade we’ll see a strong uptake in the number of electric vans that are around.

Electric vans are now available in a wide range of sizes and models. More and more manufacturers are starting to produce them. Including Mercedes, Vauxhall, Renault, Nissan, and Peugeot to name just a few. There are also electric vans from a range of other large manufacturers in the pipeline.

Whilst our processes will remain the same, we’re already working and planning, to make sure that we can produce high-quality conversions for temperature controlled electric vans.

We currently work with all sizes of business – from sole traders to companies with large fleets. Nothing is too much trouble and our workshops have been designed to deal with fleet conversions of any size.

Looking for a Temperature Controlled Electric Van?

We’d be happy to help any businesses who are looking for a temperature controlled or refrigerated electric van. Due to the limited advancements in battery technology, you may need to think about the mileage you will need the van to cover. Current electric van models still only have a limited range. Therefore, we would suggest that only businesses who require limited use of a temperature controlled electric van should consider buying one. But this is changing all the time and we are very excited to see new models being brought out all the time.

Whatever industry you’re in, Rex has over 75 years of combined experience in the temperature-controlled vehicles industry. We’ve worked in a large range of industries including butchers, fishmongers, pharmaceutical companies and even art dealers.

With our experience, we understand that each business has different requirements for it’s temperature-controlled van. Rex can work with you to create the perfect van with bespoke fixtures and fittings such as non-slip floors, bespoke shelving, data recorders, and much more.

If you’d like to find out more about how we can help you with temperature controlled electric van conversions; get in touch with us on 01323 379 609, or email

Can you convert a refrigerated van retrospectively?

The question many customers who get in touch with us ask is “Can you convert a refrigerated van retrospectively?” They may already own their vehicle or fleet of vehicles. So they could be looking to use what they already own; but want to upgrade their business and start delivering, using a temperature controlled vehicle. And the answer we give them is always a “YES!”

We may be supplied the vehicles brand new to convert. However we also work with many second hand vehicles; where someone is just starting out and has bought a van, or perhaps a few vans, that they need to convert. The options are endless and we have the knowledge to give you the best possible outcome for your business.

There isn’t anything we don’t know about temperature controlled van conversions. Whether you want to supply your product in an ambient form, chilled or even frozen, we can chat with you and advise as to what system you need and what extra fixtures and fittings we can supply, to ensure you have everything in your vehicles that you need.

Different Industries

Every industry is different as well. If you are an art dealer, you may be wanting racking to keep your artwork secure whilst in transit. Art has to be kept at a certain temperature to avoid damage and we work with many galleries who require temperature controlled transport for their collections.

Or perhaps you deliver pharmaceuticals or hazardous materials. It is imperative that you ensure your products are both kept to the correct temperature but also extremely secure whilst being transported.

Caterers also require different temperatures for food transportation, as well as safe storage for travel. As do fishmongers and also butchers.

Every type of industry is different and we always love a challenge – so just tell us what you need and we will do everything we can to help you with your refrigerated vehicle. From lighting to flooring, to colour co-ordinating and also for reversing cameras or parking sensors and much more. Take a look at what fixtures and fittings you can have in your bespoke van conversion.

Mercedes Vans Looking at Steep Growth in EV Sales

We all know that electric is the way to go. With the Electric car market growing year on year, it is now the turn of vans. But this has all been a little slower due to the weight and size of vans and the challenges faced with charging them.

However Mercedes Benz Vans have announced in an interview with Van User Magazine that they are planning to rapidly grow their EV market share. “Our aspiration is for 10% of our sales this year to be EVs” said Andrew Lawson, Sales Director at Mercedes Benz vans. “Overall, we aim to sell 36,000 vehicles in 2021, including more than 3,500 EVs. Three quarters of that number will be eSprinter and one quarter e-Vito”

The Government is pushing for the end of petrol and diesel sales by 2030 and Mercedes are totally on board with this; looking at many different options on how to sell to the EV market. All Mercedes dealers now have an EV specialist on site. And Mercedes Benz Vans is working with New Motion, for charging hardware and efficient charging solutions.

Mercedes Benz as well as its dealers have remained on call throughout lockdowns, ensuring businesses could keep going for deliveries and logistics. New van sales dropped by 20% in 2020, which was expected. However, the Mercedes Sprinter was the best selling vehicle in April – which was a great achievement, even outselling the passenger car sector.

The eVito went into production in 2020 with a new longer range version due later this year. They will also be unveiling a new Citan later in 2021 with the launch in 2022, including an EV version. This is expected to make a big impact in the compact van market.

Mercedes are consistently developing new products under the PRO Connect banner, that will come as standard for the first two years of owning an electric van. Including the ability to precondition vehicles whilst connected to a charging point and setting internal temperatures through an App on your phone. As well as this Managers will be able to see how much charge will be available on each van. They have also partnered with Geotab and Webfleet for a full range of management and telematic solutions.

Range is a constant issue with the Ev van market. But we are confident this is being consistently improved upon. Mercedes have announced that by 2023 they will be able to provide a higher mileage range. “E-Grocery is the biggest chassis cab market. We are aiming at 2023 with a higher mileage range and by 2023 we will also see a selection of electric-powered fridges” says James Riddington: Connectivity and Electric Vehicle Manager for Mercedes.

How we can help

Rex Limited are very excited about all the progress that has been made in the EV van market. We are getting many enquiries now for refrigerated electric van conversions, so are keen to see what the big players in the van sector are launching. If you have any questions about the range, mileage or anything else regarding electric vans then please get in touch with us.
